Australian artist Andrew Chan has a B.A. in Architecture from RMIT in Melbourne and an M.A. in art from NYU. Based in New York since 1999, he has received grants from the Pollock Krasner Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Arts, and his work been featured in TIME, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and on CNN. In 2011 his work can be seen at the Bronx Museum as part of Aim 30 and at Randall’s Island where he has installed a 15foot high sculpture on the grounds. His essay on TV cooking shows as pornography is included in The Gastronomica Reader (University of California Press, Feb. 2010) and was presented at the College Arts Association conference in Chicago and at the Gourmet Voice conference in Cannes.

STATEMENT

In my drawings, the basis of all my works, I use line to assimilate and create representations—in some cases, bordering on caricatures—of people and objects where the form of the subject is distorted merging the organic and the inorganic creating anthropomorphic beings set in distorted cityscapes. In creating my works I gather information from the media, along with documenting my subject with a sketchbook and/or camera, the results of which are fused together with my own remembered and actual experiences.

In my recent paintings and drawings, I depict images of food surrounded by complex patterns that represent the plurality and the multiplicity of my identity. I paint estheticized food found in glossy coffe table cook books and magazines as well as everyday food that I serve for my friends and family. The patterns are derived from historical fabrics used in women’s fashion and domestic interiors, which are symbolic of the roles woman have had in various cultures. The patterns from both eastern and western cultures are the background that enhances and suffocates the food. The food is the body and the surrogate for the desire to consume and control women. The resulting images are self-portraits that represent the plurality and multiplicity of my identity as an Asian-American immigrant woman.
Densely packed and precisely hand-painted patterns simultaneously create and interrupt the space where the still-life is presented. The rhythm of the patterns is echoed in the composition of the still-life and natural patterns found in the food. A complicated interweaving of foreground and background, created by patterns, icons, and still-lifes painted in many different styles and mediums, generates a confounding spatial ebb and flow and increase the spatial tension. The surface of my painting is varied to creat the maximum complexity and to enhance the sensuality of the paint while the divergence of styles imbues the image with collage-like dissonance. The result is a work that attracts viewers with overwhelming sensuality and the beauty while simultaneously disorients and repels them.
While the images of the food are reminiscent of the Dutch still-life tradition, the divergent styles, collage-like dissonance and the breaking of the picture planes acknowledge the practice of painting in a post-modern era. At the same time, through a labor-intensive process, I cast a critical eye on the mechanical reproduction and proliferation of imagery in our daily lives.

Lucy Kim's work investigates the boundaries of object and image. Her process combines aluminum foil, the kind commonly used in cooking, with oil painting and molding/casting techniques to create works that play with the surface of objects and figures in formulations influenced by pop imagery. Lucy Kim received her BFA from RISD in 2001, and her MFA from Yale in 2007. She received the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship to attend the Yale Norfolk Summer Progam in 2000, and in 2007 received the Carol Scholsberg Memorial Prize from Yale University. She has held residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Studios Midwest, and the MacDowell Colony. She has recently exhibited her work at Tiger Strikes Asteroid (Philadelphia), Regina Rex (Queens), Haskins Research Lab (New Haven), Vaudeville Park (Brooklyn), Slag Gallery (NYC), and the Wassaic Project (Wassaic).

Los Angeles artist D'Ette Nogle's work investigates the meaning and processes of making art and is most often realized in installations that involve video and performance as well as material objects that act as surrogates for the ideas and themes she explores.
The quote that comprises both the title and the composition of the painting was found in a now defunct shelter magazine among a list of decorating tips.
Nogle has taken the advice and produced the object described in a literal fashion.
The project will be completed when the idea/object goes home with a collector and its reproduction is published once again in a decor magazine.

Marina Zamalin is a photographer interested in studying historical, social and psychological aspects of urbanization. In this particular series, I am exploring the routine phenomena of the urban landscape at night: street lights, car lights, florescent lights, light emanating out of peoples’ homes and all the glow and shadow that these things produce. The intangibility of these elements plays a major role in my work. I am attracted to the way in which they can take over objects and change, not only our perceptions of their physical make-up, but our whole experience with them. I first photograph and then paint these settings. I see this practice as a way of distancing the image from its original reality and enhancing it with further layers of illusion.

Marco Menendez holds a BFA in Painting from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. He spends his time driving the open road, visiting obscure historic sites and “chatting it up” with the local residents. When he is not doing this, he lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Artist’s Statement

As a sculptor and conceptual crafter my process involves removing the functionality from vintage chairs, transforming their utility through a complex process of cutting, altering, sanding and reassembling. I am attracted to the chair as a medium because it is suggestive of the human body--and the female form in particular--due to its connotations of domesticity, utility, and the possession of both emotional and physical attributes.

In selecting a chair, I look for lines and forms that resemble the human form such as soft curves, delicate joints, and visually appealing textures. My process involves skewing or exaggerating these features in a way that upsets or distorts reality, alternately evoking disquiet, sentimentality, and the sense of the strangely familiar. I am interested in generating emotion by exposing the underlying structure and raw material of my subjects. Recently I have used these chair forms to examine the body in public space and how the body navigates and communicates when space is compromised.

All of these paintings are titled “Noncommittal, Antipainting …” as a means of first expressing my hesitation about making paintings, and in order to communicate that the work is not about painting or making images, but, rather about using images. I paint each one twice, and they are all black and white. First, I make the initial painting, then paint out some of the image with white. Then, I try to make the same painting again. Each is from a series of ‘California Landscape Paintings.’ The parenthetical parts of the titles use words used to describe California by early explorers/settlers followed by a descriptor of the place the image depicts (ie., places I’ve surfed, hiked, etc.)

Matthew Conradt received his Masters in Fine Art from Pratt Institute in 2008 and his Bachelors in Fine Art from Iowa State University in 2005. In 2008, Matthew was an Artist-In-Residence at the Cooper Union School of Art, and in 2010, he was a participant in the 30th year of the Artist-in-the-Marketplace program at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. Matthew currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Artist Statement:

My work addresses the narratives of American culture propagated through the imagery consumed from mass media and through the internet. I am interested in the way ideas, both real and fictitious, are communicated and contribute to a larger sense of what it means to be a contemporary American. Growing up in the mid-western rust-belt, with its decay and, paradoxically, its rapid suburbanization, I saw the unraveling of the American dream for my parents and those around us. Wood paneling in trailer homes, giant parking lots, and conversely, elaborate, wealthy interiors all become portents. Using this material, I create collages by photo-transferring appropriated found images; fragmenting and reconstituting a new image from multiple sources. I use repetition and omission as ways of changing the context and meaning, allowing for more ambiguous interpretations. What emerges from all of this is an American counter-narrative, searching for meaning and steeped in contradictions.

Anton Cabaleiro (Spain, 1977) is a visual artist who currently lives in New York City.

Jacob and I would like to thank everyone who came out last night and made the show such a success!!! We raised over $2800, all of which is going towards finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and Hodgkins.

A huge thank you to all the artists who donated their work. All night I had friends and strangers telling me how impressed they were by the level of work. There was some amazing work up on the walls. A big thank you goes out to Jeffrey from Jen Bekman Gallery for giving us the space for the night and being so gracious and generous with his time and resources.

Amazingly, we sold out of over 80% of the work, but we still have a few great pieced left. We are going to leave the auction open on these pieces until Sept 10th. Willie Wayne Smith was born in Limbe Haiti in 1984. In 1991 his family moved to central Florida where he grew up, often visiting his birthplace in the summers. Willie received his MFA in Painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2010. He will have work in the exhibition "It Was All a Dream" at the Adam Lister Gallery in Fairfax VA in September. Heeseop Yoon was born in Seoul, Korea and now lives in New York. She holds a MFA from City college of New York, and a BFA from Chung-ang University in Seoul, Korea. She also attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
Heeseop work deals with memory and perception within cluttered spaces. She begins by photographing interiors such as basements, workshops, and storage spaces,
places where everything is jumbled and time becomes ambiguous without the presence of people. From these photographs she construct a view and then she draws freehand without erasing. As she correct "mistakes" the work results in double or multiple lines, which reflect how her perception has changed over time and makes her question her initial perception. Paradoxically, greater concentration and more lines make the drawn
objects less clear. The more she sees, the less she believe in the accuracy or reality of the images she draw.

Bobby Dohrmann

Bobby Dohrmann matriculated from St. John's Pre-School in West Los Angeles and holds a certificate of completion for Kindergarten and the 1st grade from St. Paul the Apostle Elementary School in Westwood, California. He is the creator and principal operator of Operation Blanket Harvest, an annual donation drive for food and blankets, which he then distributes to the Venice/Mar Vista homeless community.

Bobby's work explores the environmental zeitgeist mantra "Recycle, Reuse and Repurpose." Choosing discarded lego toy parts and repurposing them into sculptures, he likes to play with the idea of weaponry as heroic -- each piece is designed to be an action hero that fights for good over evil. He hopes to one day become an underwater anthropologist, and develop super-hero machines to join the fight against international whale hunting.

Soo Kim

Soo Kim (born South Korea, 1969) moved to Los Angeles in 1980. After earning a bachelor of arts degree from the University of California, Riverside, she combined studies in critical writing, art and film at the California Institute of the Arts for her master of fine arts.

Kim's practice as an artist blends the making of photographs with the critical interpretation of images on a broader level. Recent bodies of work employ the techniques of cutting and layering prints, introducing areas of absence or disruption to address the issues of photographic transparency and the immediate consumption of images. Kim believes that the lengthy process required to create her photographs infuses them with a "slowness" that finds its counterpart in the amount of time it takes the viewer to read them. Leigh McCarthy

Leigh McCarthy is a serious daydreamer with an overactive imagination who grew up in LA. She is a multi-media raconteur whose work uses plays with narrative conventions. McCarthy's pieces also explore negative space, suggesting that what is not there can be as evocative as what is: stories untold; disasters unrecorded; pitfalls unseen. Once called a "romantic conceptualist," McCarthy here explores one of the subjects closest to her heart: the tenderness of failure.

McCarthy received her MFA from Goldsmiths College in London in 2001 and currently lives and works in San Francisco. Group exhibitions and projects include the Torrance Art Museum, Torrance (2010), Getty Center, Los Angeles (2008 and 2006), Phantom Galleries, Los Angeles (2008), L.A.C.E., Los Angeles (2006), and the Institute of Contemporary Art, London (2000). Her work has been reviewed in i-D magazine, Timeout London, and Dazed and Confused. Leigh is so very sorry she can't make it to the opening for Try in NY. Thanks for your donation, Leigh!
